rBGH-Free FAQs

How will I know that the milk is artificial growth hormone free?
A package label will declare "Our Farmers' Pledge: No Artificial Growth Hormones."

Are all Dean Foods products now artificial growth hormone-free?
Not yet, but we hope that as more consumers request artificial growth hormone-free milk, demand will spur more supply and we can offer more natural products.

If there is no label on the milk, can I assume the farmers are using artificial hormones to produce their milk?
Typically, yes.

Are artificial growth hormones bad for you?
In 1993, the FDA approved the use of artificial growth hormones and concluded they are safe for consumers, for cows and the environment. Some consumers, however, prefer to drink milk produced without the use of artificial growth hormones.

Do artificial growth hormones change the milk or affect people who drink the milk?
All milk contains naturally occurring growth hormones. Whether artificial or naturally occurring, they are biologically inactive in the human body.

Does using artificial growth hormones impact animal welfare?
The National institutes of Health found that effects of artificial growth hormone on the health of the dairy cow appear to be minimal. Some farmers, however, believe that it causes stress on the animals and may lead to an increased susceptibility to infection.
